Busy Season

Both the Salon Orchestra and Marianne and Geoffrey’s duo combination have had a busy 2001 which began with a sell out Orchestra Concert at The Mansion House for The Lord Mayor of London. A large number of engagements for 2002 are confirmed. Click here for details of forthcoming concerts.

In June the Orchestra recorded again for BBC Radio 2’s Friday Night is Music Night. During the Orchestras debut for the show the previous year the audience and the BBC Concert Orchestra stamped and roared their approval. During the programme, presenter Richard Baker recorded such comments as "what a showstopper!" and "I remember hearing the orchestras in the Lyons Corner Houses but I suspect they were not as good as Marianne Olyver and her Orchestra".

Geoffrey Pratley

Marianne’s new duo partner and the Orchestra’s pianist Geoffrey Pratley was for over twenty years a regular partner to the mezzo soprano Dame Janet Baker, the French cellist Paul Tortelier, and the distinguished British violinist Ralph Holmes. Geoffrey is a Professor at the Royal Academy of Music and Trinity College of Music, London.

Serenade

Marianne Olyver and her Salon Orchestra with Barnardo’s hosted a pre release party and concert under the auspices of The Lord Mayor’s Appeal at Le Meridien Waldorf, Aldwych, to celebrate the release of Serenade, their second album.

Tracks from Serenade and Dark Eyes (the Orchestra’s debut CD) are regularly broadcast on BBC Radio 2’s Richard Baker’s Melodies for You, Friday Night is Music Night, All Time Greats, BBC Radio 3’s In Tune, Brian Kay’s new Sunday afternoon programme on BBC Radio 3 entitled Brian Kay’s Light Programme, and Classic FM.

Recreating the authentic sound of the salon orchestras that graced the fashionable spas and resorts of Europe between the 1880s and 1950s, Serenade brings a cherished bygone era back to life.

The fifteen track programme includes the first recording in over half a century of Alfredo Campoli’s stunning transcription for violin and salon orchestra of Serenade by Elgar. Also included is Robert Farnon’s Ivor Award-winning Westminster Waltz and the world premiere of Billy Mayerl’s unforgettable Blue Shadows, originally written for the late, great Max Jaffa.
